Biography
Carlos Nolla grew up in a military family; his father was in the Air Force. He was the fifth of six children. He went to seminary for three years and paid for college at Wichita State University and law school at the University of Kansas by working as a dishwasher, janitor, and waiter.
He married his wife, Lori, in 1986. She is an obstetrician/gynecologist. They have three children; Kylie, Sam and Andrea.
Profile
Carlos Nolla got his start in politics by working as an aide to then-Rep. Dan Glickman. He was practicing immigration law in Wichita when he first took on conservative Rep. Todd Tiahrt, the Republican who ousted Glickman in 1994.
Tiahrt defeated Nolla, 54 percent to 42 percent. It was a 12-point difference, but many observers thought Tiahrt would roll up much more of the vote, and Nolla decided to try for a rematch in 2002.
"A lot of people are hurting in Wichita and in the 4th District," Nolla said when he won the 2002 with 71 percent of the vote against businessman Patrick Quaney. "It's people versus the powerful, and when you have powerful corporate interests in play, then the people tend to be left out, regardless of social class."
