4th District

By The Associated Press

Republican Todd Tiahrt is defending his seat against Democrat Carlos Nolla. Tiahrt has represented the 4th district since 1994.

In the 2000 presidential election, district voters chose Republican and former Texas Gov. George W. Bush over Democrat Al Gore.

About 31.5 percent of residents in the 4th district make a living as doctors, lawyers, managers and other professionals and 25.5 percent work in 9 to 5 office jobs as salespeople, administrative assistants or secretaries, for example. Another 17.0 percent are employed in transportation and production, jobs courted by powerful unions.

Median household income is $40,856 a year and the median value of a home is $76,600.

Married couples make up 53.9 percent of the district's households, and those with children represent 25 percent.

Population 675,755

Results from the 2000 U.S. Census not only created changes in the number of districts in many states across the country, but they also showed demographic changes within existing districts.

The district profile above is compiled from information in the 2000 census but reflects district boundries from the 106th Congress. Information about the new Congress is not expected to be released until at the earliest, January, after the next session has already started.
